Alcon Systane iLux2 MGD Thermal Pulsation System

SHARE

Description

Alcon has announced its latest dry eye innovation, the Systane iLux2 Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) Thermal Pulsation System. This new handheld device uses imaging technology to take infrared photos and HD videos of the meibomian glands. It helps patients see their need for treatment. They can also visualize the procedure and see results in just one week.

“Alcon is dedicated to the advancement of medical device technology and providing Eye Care Professionals (ECPs) with the tools needed to treat their patients effectively,” said Fred Ellis, Vice President, U.S. Pharmaceutical and Dry Eye, Alcon. “With the Systane iLux2 MGD Thermal Pulsation System, ECPs will be able to further patient trust and confidence because seeing is believing.”

The Systane iLux2 MGD Thermal Pulsation System adds to Alcon’s dry eye treatments. It helps doctors customize MGD care for each patient in eight to twelve minutes.

  • The device’s imaging technology allows patients to view both their meibomian glands and treatment through infrared imaging and HD video of the procedure.
  • ECPs can customize heat and compression across each easy-to-visualize treatment zone.

The Systane iLux2 MGD Thermal Pulsation System helps eye care professionals build trust with their patients. It does this by showing clear images of the disease. This allows them to track the disease over time using stored images of the meibomian glands.

“56% of MGD patients see four or more Eye Care Practitioners in search of proper diagnosis and relief.3 This is a prevalent diagnosis in my practice, and it is essential for me to stay on top of the latest treatment options,” said Eric D. Donnenfeld, M.D., FAAO, Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island, NY. “The new Systane iLux2 MGD Thermal Pulsation System gives me the confidence to customize treatments based on my patients’ needs and help them see, understand and value their MGD treatment.”

Introducing the Systane iLux2

For years, dry eye treatments were limited to artificial tears, warm compresses, and sometimes prescription eye drops. While these methods help, they don’t address the root cause of MGD. The Systane® iLux2® changes that with thermal pulsation technology.

So, what does this mean for you?

  • Gentle Heat Therapy: The iLux2® device applies targeted warmth to the eyelids, melting blockages in the meibomian glands.
  • Precise Expression: Once the oil loosens, the device gently expresses the glands, allowing them to function properly again.
  • Fast & Effective: The treatment takes just a few minutes per eye, and most patients notice relief almost immediately.

This technology works better than regular warm compresses. It provides steady, controlled heat and gentle pressure. This helps clear the glands properly. That means longer-lasting relief for people struggling with dry eye.

More Than Just Dry Eye Relief

While the Systane® iLux2® is best known for treating MGD-related dry eye, it also helps with:

  • Red, irritated eyes can occur from prolonged screen use. This is a common issue for individuals who work from home or use digital devices for extended periods.
  • Eye fatigue and discomfort caused by contact lenses
  • Improving the overall comfort of your vision, making daily tasks easier

If you’ve tried drops, warm compresses, or other treatments with little success, it might be time to try something new.

Ready for Long-Term Relief?

Dry eye can be frustrating, but you don’t have to live with discomfort. The Systane® iLux2® provides a modern solution. It goes beyond quick fixes and helps improve your eye health by addressing the underlying issue.

Fast And Effective Treatment Process

The ILux2 MGD treatment device delivers treatment directly to the blocked meibomian glands. Once treatment begins, it takes approximately 8–12 minutes for both eyes.

Your medical professional assesses your eyelids to determine the treatment zones.

Your eyelid is held in place between the soft, biocompatible pads of the ILux2 device’s Smart Tip Patient Interface. For comfort, you may keep your eyes closed.

Therapeutic, light-based heat will begin to warm the blocked glands to a safe temperature, helping to soften and release the oil. The meibum melts, and your doctor can apply additional heat or pressure as needed.

Through compression, the oil is expressed from the glands, and treatment is complete.

Indication

The Systane® iLux2® is used for heat and pressure therapy in adults with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This condition is linked to evaporative dry eye. The device can also capture and store digital images and videos of the meibomian glands.

Potential Adverse Reactions: Potential adverse effects may occur as a result of the procedure. These effects include but are not limited to, the onset or increase in: eyelid/eye pain requiring discontinuation of the treatment procedure, eyelid irritation or inflammation, temporary reddening of the skin, ocular surface irritation or inflammation (e.g., corneal abrasion, conjunctival edema or conjunctival injection (hyperemia)), and ocular symptoms (e.g., burning, stinging, tearing, itching, discharge, redness, foreign body sensation, visual disturbance, sensitivity to light).

Systane iLux2 Delivers Fast Treatment for MGD

  • Advanced imaging. Your eye care provider can use the special, handheld Systane® iLux2® device. This device helps them see your meibomian glands. It also allows them to check your Dry Eye in a new way.
  • Gentle non-invasive treatment. The Systane® iLux2® MGD Thermal Pulsation device gently warms and applies pressure to your eyelids. This helps unblock meibomian glands. Treatment of both eyes only takes approximately 8-12 minutes.1,2
