Description

Alcon Argos biometer is designed to promote delivering precision in optical procedures. It is a contactless and noninvasive clinical biometer. It uses SS-OCT (Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography), the first biometer to use this technology.

The Argos Biometer is majorly used before IOL surgeries to determine the dimensions of a person’s optical lens. It provides accurate information even about the cloudiest cataracts. It delivers precise and quick measurements of nine parameters that count during IOL selection.

the customization of surgery based on the characteristics of the patient is one of the most important aspects to guarantee the success of cataract surgery”. In addition, he also highlights that “the new Alcon Argos equipment allows us to take a step beyond biometrics . It offers surgeons and patients the possibility of obtaining the best refractive results from lens surgery and optimizing consultation time to the maximum . ”

Paulo Pinto , Alcon’s Surgical Country Franchise Head Iberia

An optical biometer is a device that measures the length of the eye, the dimensions of the cornea, and ACD (Anterior Chamber Depth). These measurements are required in the case of cataract patients who need to undergo Intraocular Lens surgery.

Assessing these things helps determine the perfect artificial lens for replacing the natural one. The surgery consumes significantly less time, but the measurements were taken before the surgery to assess the quality of vision.

Alcon Argos Key Features:

  • The Argos Advanced Optical Biometer is a noninvasive, non-contact device designed to maximize the clinician’s ease of use by streamlining biometric acquisition and minimizing discomfort for the patient.
  • According to the manufacturer, the Argos is not yet clinically available; however, it outperformed competitor devices in clinical trials.
  • The Argos consolidates the process of acquiring biometric parameters with a high success rate and accuracy, even in the densest of cataracts.
  • It provides precise ocular biometry for the accurate selection of IOLs using swept-source OCT.
  • A near-infrared swept laser is scanned across the patient’s eye with swept-source technology.
  • As light is detected from boundary layers, an accurate reconstruction of the ocular physiology is created in the device’s software.
  • With fast image reconstruction algorithms, real-time 2-D imaging of the eye is available during biometer alignment.
  • According to the company, image acquisition for biometric and keratometry measurement takes the Argos less than 1 second, with the device capturing six images in that time and generating three sets of results, calculating the average and standard deviation values.
  • The Argos optical biometer is based on coherent optical interferometry and tomography with the lateral scanning of a 1-μm swept-source beam.
  • The illumination generates Keratometry (K) values

Contactless and Noninvasive

The Argos Biometer has a contactless imaging procedure as compared to manual A-scans. Argos reduces the overall contact time between the physician and the patient and is much quicker than manual scans.

Clinicians prefer less contact during patient interaction, and Argos biometer takes care of that issue.

Real-Time Imaging

The user interface of Argos Biometer is based on Windows. There are tracking markers to guide the technicians involved in the procedure to reach alignment.

Real-time 2D imaging assures trust in biometric imaging procedures. A button mounted on a helps to bring about accurate measurements.

Analysis Mode

Post measurement, the user can check the accuracy of the assessment with the help of the 2D image captured.

The technician can manually adjust the boundary positions for fine-tuning and precision in this mode.

Dense Cataract Mode

The most significant advantage of the Argos Biometer over other biometers is its ability to penetrate through dense cataracts. Argos has ten times more sensitivity than other conventional partial coherence reflectometry devices.

In the ‘Dense Cataract’ mode, the device can successfully raise its sensitivity by a hundred times. So while detecting the axial length measurement, the results show a much higher precision rate.

Power Calculations

The Argos Biometer provides streamlined advanced calculations for the measurements taken. IOL power calculations are made with four formulas of the surgeon’s choice.

It also provides sophisticated astigmatism tools that help patients specifically visit for astigmatism issues.

Also, the biometry values acquired during measurement output in a ready-to-print format. It cancels the need for clinicians to manually secure printout formats.

Time management

Argos biometer is relatively significantly quicker in its assessment than other biometers. It takes the biometer less than one second to acquire an image for biometric and keratometric measurements.

The device captures six images and presents results in three sets. It also calculates the standard deviation and average values before delivering the results.

Multiple parameters in one scan

The Argos biometer can cover the measurements of multiple structures in one scan; some of which are:

  • Toric Axis.
  • Lens Thickness
  • Pupil size
  • Central Corneal Thickness
  • K values
  • Axial Length (AL)
  • Anterior Chamber Depth (ACD)

Corneal Curvature Data are generated through the reflected image gained from a ring of 16 LEDs combined with the OCT signal.

Cataracts:

A cataract is a condition where the standard clear lens of the eye becomes clouded or blurry. It usually occurs due to some injury or due to aging. Sometimes, genetic disorders can also be a reason behind cataracts.

To get rid of the blurry vision caused by cataracts, ophthalmologists recommend IOL surgery. For this procedure, dimensions of eye structures are needed.

For obtaining these measurements, surgeons need an optical biometer.

What is Alcon Argos Biometer

The Argos SS-OCT biometer was developed by Movu Inc., based in the US. This was designed with a vision to provide clarity and precision in optical procedures for cataract patients.

The most significant plus point of the Argos Biometer over other devices is that it is comparatively quicker and can capture data from cataracts that are too clouded. Other biometers cannot collect data from cataracts that are too cloudy.

“When we began using Argos, it was very important that we continue to obtain keratometry and axial length measurements that were consistent with the above devices that we had been using over the years,”

Lawrence Woodard, MD, medical director of Omni Eye Services in Atlanta.

About SS-OCT

OCT refers to Optical Coherence Tomography. It is a commonly performed clinical test that helps to identify retinal diseases. There are other types of OCT like SD-OCT and TD-OCT; however, Swept-Source is relatively the best.

Here, Swept-Source refers to the type of laser used to acquire the measurements. Argos Biometer is mainly preferred because it uses Swept-Source Tomography. This technology is faster and penetrates deeper into the eye structure.

SS-OCT-powered biometer can visualize retinal, vitreous, and choroid structures even behind dense pre-retinal structures. This feature makes it more potent as compared to other biometers.

Since clinicians are always looking for ways to help patients and overcome technological challenges, Argos Biometer is preferred.

Precautions

This device was developed to assist ocular surgery procedures, and only a certified technician should be allowed to use it. It should be used only under a physician’s supervision.

The biometer is equipped with a Class 1 laser light source. Anyone handling this device should be aware of the radiation that is emitted.

Certain factors may affect the assessment of patients’ eyes. Pseudophakic eye, non-intact cornea, contact lenses, blood in the vitreous humor, retinal detachment, non-intact cornea, etc., are a few factors to consider while using the Argos biometer.

Some other factors and information are found in the Argos Biometer user manual. Operators should always read the manual before setting up the device and consider the factors that can alter the measurements.

Alcon ARGOS measures axial length using a segmented index method to improve postoperative refraction accuracy. This makes it possible to measure axial length data with high precision, which is expected to improve accuracy. In addition, the measurement speed of biometric measurements, including the axial length, is fast, reducing the risk of variation in measurement results and improving the accuracy of surgical planning.

ARGOS is expected to improve surgical accuracy and streamline the surgical planning process through seamless integration with the Alcon Cataract Refractive Suite with image guidance.

The Argos Biometer is one of the most modern tools to assist in the optical healthcare industry. This device is much more evolved as compared to other biometers.

The best part of its success is found in patients who have a case of Dense Cataracts. Argos may evolve to increase their pace and sensitivity with more modern technology and provide more precise results.
